Apple's original innovation was the GUI, and after that the extremely simple and intuitive UI. Nowhere along the line do they claim to be an innovator of the more back-end things.
As for the exploit, a super-super summary is that the "sudo" command accidentally granted root to anyone when time=0. This isn't an OSX-only exploit, but OSX doesn't update sudo on its own like other Unix OSs.
