If you're on a tight budget, I would recommend the LG G3 (about 50-60$ on ebay)
Great screen, nice button placement (on the back), and good resolution. Only drawback is the batteries. You might have to purchase extras.

G3 is way too old in 2018. Anything below G5 is sub-par on today's standards.

As a matter of Interest, on average usage, what's the battery life?

It is old, but the g3 is still a good phone for its budget.
Out of my experiences, I believe it's on par with the iphone 5

That's a terrible battery life, or should I say, lack of.

It reminds me of my old

. I also had two batteries- the smaller lasted an hour (standby) and the larger double that.

That phone looks ancient

Back In the late 80s, early 90s.

At the time, I was working In a warehouse and to get signal, I had to leave my position, go outside and walk around until the phone picked up a cell phone tower. There's was very little chance It worked Indoors.

Years ago, mum and I were living in a split house house and we still needed to walk outdoors to make any phone calls.

I also experienced the same with no signal whilst Inside my home.

As for shopping malls, there was no chance of reception. The same with lifts/elevators.
